Build your child’s confidence in writing letters like N and X with the tenth set in our free prewriting worksheets series: Right and Left Diagonal Lines!
This set of free prewriting worksheets featuring right and left diagonal lines is the tenth set in an extensive prewriting series! If you’re just getting started with prewriting, be sure to check out the first set in our series here. (This set also includes guides on “Pencil Safety” and “How to Hold a Pencil.”)
About These Prewriting Worksheets
Your child has begun learning how to trace and draw both right diagonal lines and left diagonal lines.
In this set we’re starting to put the two together! We’re prepping for the X shape, which is one of the 9 strokes/shapes your child is expected to master in prewriting.
As this set of worksheets progress, students will be expected to go back and forth between tracing right and left diagonal lines. First, they will do this within individual boxes. Next, they will learn to trace these diagonal lines between handwriting lines. Finally, they will shift from tracing to drawing them in a connect-the-dots type fashion.
What is Prewriting Anyway?
Prewriting for a young child is the process of developing the skills needed for writing, such as learning how to hold a pencil, how to use a pencil, and how to make individual shapes and strokes.
Why is Prewriting Important?
Prewriting builds confidence, rather than overwhelm.
It provides a step-by-step approach to writing that helps first-time writers tackle different shapes/strokes, one at a time.
By gradually introducing each stroke, children are being set up for success as they prepare for the multiple, combined strokes they’ll encounter in each letter of handwriting.
