About These Prewriting Worksheets
In our first two prewriting sets, we introduced vertical and horizontal lines. In this set, we’re combining the two lines for a few different reasons. First of all, we’re reviewing what was already taught. Second, this back-and-forth combination is teaching your child to switch directions with his or her pencil, further refining his/her fine motor skills. Third, we’re preparing your child for an important stroke in the world of prewriting: the cross sign/plus sign. Along with vertical and horizontal lines, this is one of the 9 strokes/shapes your child is expected to master before writing alphabet letters.
This set also includes a worksheet that introduces the skill of writing, rather than just tracing. As your child first attempts to connect the dots, he/she will get all the closer to writing alphabet letters!
Remember, don’t worry about perfection; this is only the beginning! Encourage your child every step of the way!
What is Prewriting Anyway?
For a young child, prewriting is simply the development of skills needed for writing. Learning how to hold a pencil, how to use a pencil, and how to make individual shapes and strokes are some of the most important skills taught in prewriting.
Why is Prewriting Important?
Prewriting is a step-by-step approach that eases your child into the world of writing. One could initially jump into alphabet letter tracing without first developing prewriting skills. However, going cold turkey could be quite overwhelming for your little one. Prewriting takes out the overwhelm and helps your child grow in confidence as he/she tackles writing for the first time.
