About These Prewriting Worksheets
In the two previous prewriting sets we explored the cross/plus sign, where vertical and horizontal lines came together for the first time.
This new prewriting set introduces the square, one of the 9 strokes/shapes a child is expected to master on his/her prewriting journey. With this shape, a second set of lines is incorporated, for a total of two vertical lines and two horizontal lines. Additionally, your child will be tracing the horizontal line in two different directions–from left to right and vice versa.
It is important to note that this is not the only way to trace or draw a square. In fact, many (if not most or all) resources do not even include specific directions in which your child should make a square. After much thought and consideration, I felt it necessary and helpful to include such specific directions for the strokes of a square. Moreover, I hold the opinion that the directed strokes in these worksheets are the most efficient and fastest way to draw a square.
Stay the course with these prewriting worksheets. You will bless your child with a deep confidence in writing. Many students struggle with frustration and anxiety in their writing. If you fully invest in the prewriting skills involved in this series, the frustration and anxiety will melt away!
What is Prewriting Anyway?
For a preschooler or kindergartener, prewriting is the process of developing the skills needed for writing. Learning how to hold a pencil, how to use a pencil, and how to make individual shapes and strokes are some of the most important skills prewriting covers.
Why is Prewriting Important?
Prewriting is not mandatory, but boy, is it extremely helpful!
Prewriting takes your child on a step-by-step journey that gives him/her the confidence needed to later tackle alphabet letter writing.
Rather than tackling the multiple strokes and patterns of alphabet letters cold turkey, prewriting breaks down these strokes and patterns into easier, more digestible pieces.
