This set of free prewriting worksheets featuring the X shape is the twelfth set in an extensive prewriting series! If you’re just getting started with prewriting, be sure to check out the first set in our series here. (This set also includes guides on “Pencil Safety” and “How to Hold a Pencil.”)

About These Prewriting Worksheets

Your child has already been introduced to the X shape, which is one of the 9 prewriting shapes/strokes your child needs to master in the prewriting world.

In this set of worksheets, students will shift from tracing to drawing this shape. The first worksheet will review tracing the X shape in individual boxes, the second and third worksheets will direct students to trace between handwriting lines, and the last two worksheets will guide them in drawing the X shape for the first time.

What is Prewriting Anyway?

Early prewriting involves the process of developing the skills needed for writing, such as learning how to hold a pencil, how to use a pencil, and how to make individual shapes and strokes.

Why is Prewriting Important?

Prewriting sets students up for success in writing.

It provides a step-by-step approach to writing that helps first-time writers tackle different shapes/strokes, one at a time.

By gradually introducing each stroke, children are able to have preparation under the belt before encountering the multiple, combined strokes in each letter of handwriting.
