This set of free prewriting worksheets featuring the square is the seventh set in an extensive prewriting series! If you’re just getting started with prewriting, be sure to check out the first set in our series here. (This set also includes guides on “Pencil Safety” and “How to Hold a Pencil.”)

About These Prewriting Worksheets

Your child has now mastered vertical and horizontal lines, as well as learned how to draw these lines together in the form of a cross and now a square.

In this set we’re taking the square a step further. Students will shift from tracing the lines of squares to drawing the lines of squares in a connect-the-dots type fashion. Doing this temporarily removes the crutch of tracing and further exposes your child to their future in writing.

Perfection is not expected. Exposure is key! Cheer your little one on with a spirit of encouragement!

What is Prewriting Anyway?

For a child who has never learned to write, prewriting involves the development of skills needed for writing. Learning how to hold a pencil, how to use a pencil, and how to make individual shapes and strokes are some of the most important skills taught in prewriting.

Why is Prewriting Important?

Prewriting holds the key to confidence.

It provides a step-by-step approach to writing that eases the overwhelm for first-time writers.

Each stroke is mastered one at a time, setting children up for success as they prepare for the strokes they’ll encounter in handwriting.
